So far we have the following ideas for our back yard:

astro-turf

built in BBQ

Anybody have any other fun ideas?

fake grass - they make some stuff that looks pretty real. You'd never have to mow it.

Seriously - built-in BBQ is very cool.

Ultimately we probably will have real grass just for its O2 producing skills. Also, it will help tone down the summer temperature in the backyard. 115 degrees on fake grass would not be pleasant.

Aunt Julene and I have a couple of suggestions.
All you need to plant is ONE bamboo tree...
OR
a freedom lawn (and then write a book about it. See this book "Suburban Safari" by Hannah Holmes)

Since I don't have time to read a book... What is a freedom lawn?

Does Bamboo grow in the central valley?

Does the noMow support walking on it?

I need to get my moms to have more distinguishing names on here.

Yes, bamboo grows in the central valley and some is nice but you REALLY have to make sure you get the right kind (clumping not running) and that you REALLY want it because it is impossible to get rid of once planted. Some people use it for privacy screens. There is a black kind that looks pretty cool.

Supposedly the NoMow lives on just the local seasonal water but I have sincere doubts about that. It is supposed to stay at three inches, although some of those plants listed seem to me to be somewhat taller. Clyde Robin is an older guy into native plants and conservation. I bought stuff from him when we first lived here.

Korean grass is another that you only mow once a year at most. It is a bit clumping so it makes little hummocks.

I thought by picking "other" there would be no name at all LOL but you knew I was your mom anyway.

On the way back from Myrtle Point yesterday Aunt Julene and I designed the perfect back yard (nomow): plant one bamboo tree, one blackberry vine, and one English ivy plant. Wait one year and see which plant wins. Dad, Uncle Jim and I are voting for blackberries. :) We had a good time discussing the various invasive possibilities.
